About the Symposium – Opportunities for Artificial Intelligence in Cancer

In recent years, machine learning technology such as deep learning artificial intelligence has made tremendous breakthroughs in diverse fields ranging from self-driving cars, speech and natural language processing, financial forecasting to even creating works of art. Given these advances, one may wonder: how might artificial intelligence impact our understanding and treatment of cancer? To help answer this question, we welcome you to join us for a special two-day virtual symposium, where leading experts from UCI will discuss active work in artificial intelligence applied to cancer research. Key topics include: overview of machine learning technology as applied to healthcare; active research in areas such as brain, breast, lung, prostate and colon cancer; opportunities for engagement at UCI and beyond. All invited lectures and topics will be discussed in a manner accessible to a broad audience regardless of existing expertise or experience in the field. Students, trainees, fellows, faculty, and staff are all encouraged and welcome to participate.

About the Workshop – Introduction to Neural Networks and Tensorflow

Following a series of invited lectures from leading researchers at UCI, where high-level machine learning concepts and applications will be discussed, we invite participants to take a deep dive into AI theory with Dr. Peter Chang. In this two-hour hands-on workshop, participants will gain an intuitive understanding of neural networks and build a working model to classify hand-written digits. All Python code will be written in Jupyter notebooks hosted by Google Colaboratory, with links and tutorials provided for review after the session; no special hardware or setup is need. Though no formal machine learning background is required, those without experience in Python coding are recommended to review online tutorials prior to the workshop.
